Gendered Archive: Below the Surface

'Below the Surface' collages are created by layering domestic paper samples including textured and vintage wallpapers, dressmaking patterns and tissue paper wrappings.

Utilising elements of the everyday, the collages combine nostalgic references to our shared histories and evoke memories of the familiarity of home.

The overlaid papers create further pattern and texture, referencing our rich social interactions and also the hidden tensions and emotions that underpin every family.

'Below the surface-stream, shallow and light,

Of what we say we feel – below the stream,

As light, of what we think we feel – there flows

With noiseless current strong, obscure and deep,

The central stream of what we feel indeed'

Matthew Arnold
