Gendered Archive: Textiles

Work created with textiles inherited from female family members. The domestic textiles have been passed down through the generations and all carry personal memories and narratives.

The transferred items include pillow cases, tray cloths, napkins and hankies, all now seldom used in everyday life. The traditional sewing techniques used such as emboidery, crochet and patchwork have also become less relevant.

The embossing technique used is a way of bringing the items into the present and retaining them to a personal domestic archive. The embosses are worked into with graphite pencil as a way of focussing on the details, whilst making my own direct mark on the vintage linens.

'There's many a slip 'twixt cup and lip...'

'Tea on the lawn with a trolley of cakes was also an annual treat - marshmallow chocolate biscuits were my favourite...'
